In Memory: Xari Mayr 1995 – 2018

Last week we heard of the tragic death of Xari Mayr.

Xari, who was just 22, died in an avalanche on the 24th January 2018 while descending from a route in Langental region of the Dolomites.

Despite being so young he was already both a hugely talented climber and experienced mountaineer. An aspirant IFMGA mountain guide, whose passion for climbing had taken him to such places as Yosemite, the Scottish Highlands and Pakistan and who had a string of first ascents to his name especially in the mountains around his home town of Garmisch in Southern Germany.

He passionately lived the life he loved and pursued his own goals. The joy of doing what he loved inspired us and everyone around him.

At the end of August, Xari along with Fritz Miller and Rainer Treppte, were denied a successful ascent of the South Pillar of Ogre III in Pakistan due to poor weather conditions, but within weeks Xari had  returned to the Alps to claim a solo ascent of Via Vertigine (VI+, A2, 1000m) on the east face of Monte Brento in Italy. It was a little dream come true for Xari. And only as recently as December Xari along with his climbing partner Andi Hammerstingl opened up a new line up the North Face of Geierkopf West in the Ammergauer Alps with a redpoint ascent of Icefactor (M7, WI5, 250m).
