Baffle structure is crucial to the performance of down sleeping bags. Without it, even the best quality down will not loft and insulate to its full potential. Baffles affect a sleeping bag’s durability, weight, and the migration of down inside them – they are the building blocks from which sleeping bags are made.
Keystone Shingle
A unique method of construction developed by Mountain Equipment which creates an extremely warm sleeping bag that is durable, soft, and with no cold spots. The traditional method of vertical shingle construction is highly effective but can lead to cold spots at either the edge of the bag or at its centre because of the required seaming. Our Keystone shingle foregoes this problem by positioning the warmest part of the bag over the user and reduces cold spots by using a central triangular piece of insulation with vertical shingle at either side. It is used in the top side of the Nova sleeping bags.
Offset Layered Construction
Offset layers are used in the Nova sleeping bags’ undersides. It is a lightweight and relatively simple method of construction where sheets of insulation are laid on top of one another. It gives great all round performance.
